BTMed offers annual screening for lung cancer to eligible workers determined to be at high risk for lung cancer. BTMed uses low-dose helical computed tomography (CT) scans to detect lung cancer at an early stage, when treatment is most effective.
CT scans are offered to participants who meet LDCT eligibility criteria based on age, smoking and medical history, and work exposures.
BTMed ELCD Eligibility Criteria:
- Age 50-80*
And one of the following:
- Current or former smoker with 20 or more pack years
- Asbestosis-related findings on chest x-ray
- Current or former smoker with 10 or more pack years, and one of the following:
- 5 or more years working on a DOE site or construction trades work
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on spirometry, or self-reported physician diagnosed COPD; chronic bronchitis; or emphysema if spirometry data is unavailable
- A personal history any cancer except for skin cancer
*Participants over 80 years old must be cleared by a primary care physician to continue in the ELCD Program.
BTMed provides initial/baseline, follow-up, and annual scans to eligible ELCD participants. Ongoing annual repeat low-dose CT scans are offered if an individual’s initial/baseline scan is normal.
If an individual’s scan shows one or more nodules that are not highly suspicious for cancer, they are offered a follow-up scan at 3 or 6 months to determine if there have been any changes to the nodule(s). If a nodule is suspicious for lung cancer, the participant is referred to a specialist for diagnostic evaluation and treatment. BTMed does not provide compensation or pay for follow-up care for participants.
